When a student is unable to use text-to-speech as an embedded designated support or embedded accommodation due to other learning needs, the student may be eligible to use the non-embedded read aloud designated support or non-embedded read aloud accommodation that requires a test reader for the Smarter Balanced Assessments, Hawai‘i State Science Assessments (HSA Science), and End-of-Course (EOC) Exams.

A test reader is an adult who provides an oral presentation of the assessment text to the eligible student. The test reader must be trained and qualified and must follow the Guidelines for Read Aloud, Test Reader. The Security/Confidentiality Agreement on page 18 in the Guidelines for Read Aloud, Test Reader document must be signed by the test reader and the school Test Coordinator and submitted to the Department's Assessment Section before the student is tested. A student's score for an assessment will be invalidated if the signed form is not received before testing begins.

For students approved for testing in Spanish for Smarter Balanced Mathematics Assessments, the test reader must follow the Guidelines for Read Aloud in Spanish, Test Reader.

Scribes are allowable for Smarter Balanced ELA/Literacy and Mathematics Assessments, Hawai‘i State Science Assessments (HSA Science), and End-of-Course (EOC) Exams as a documented non-embedded designated support for non-ELA writing items and a documented non-embedded accommodation for ELA writing items.

The scribe must be trained and qualified and must follow the Scribing Protocol. The Security/Confidentiality Agreement on page 5 in the Scribing Protocol document must be signed by the scribe and submitted to the Department's Assessment Section before the student is tested.

Smarter Balanced 100s Number Table /core/fileparse.php/3410/urlt/Smarter-Balanced-100s-Number-Table.pdf

A table listing numbers from 1-100 is a non-embedded accommodation for grades 4 and above mathematics items. The 100s number table is to be used only for students with visual processing or spatial perception needs as documented in their IEP or 504 plan. This table may be printed only for students approved for this accommodation. Please see the Smarter Balanced Summative Test Administration Manual for additional information on requesting this accommodation.

Smarter Balanced Multiplication Table /core/fileparse.php/3410/urlt/Smarter-Balanced-Multiplication-Table.pdf

A single-digit (1–9) multiplication table is a non-embedded accommodation for grades 4 and above mathematics items. The multiplication table is to be used only for students with a documented and persistent calculation disability. This table may be printed only for students approved for this accommodation. Please see the Smarter Balanced Summative Test Administration Manual for additional information on requesting this accommodation.
